So many times a person hears all the negative reports of transgendered people losing the respect and love of friends and family members once they bring their trans issues out into the open. This is unfortunate since during their time of transition, since there are so many problems going on in their lives they have to deal with on a daily basis that having a trusted friend or caring family member would be so beneficial to them.
I read reports much too often of transgendered people committing suicide because of being shunned by their peers, families and society in general. According to estimates, transsexuals attempting suicide range from about 17% to about 20%. A transgendered person has the same daily problems as the rest of society with a lot more added to the list.
Imagine yourself waking up each morning wondering if when you go into work today if you still have a job. A lot of trans people face that situation everyday. So many employers, once they find out a person is transgendered, conveniently find a way to eliminate the particular position the trans person has worked at. Thankfully through the many anti-discrimative laws passed through-out the country, and employers becoming more informed there has been a decrease in this happening. Even though the decrease hasn't been enough each little bit helps.
There are so many things society takes for granted that is an everyday issue for the trans person. Take health insurance for example. So many companies offer some form of insurance for their employees be it workers comp, blue cross / blue shield, or some other form of insurance. If a person were to read the fine print stating the coverages, ( which most people only do when it is too late ) the majority of them list transgender care as excluded along with any other cosmetic surgeries. This boils down to an out of pocket expense for things like therapy, hormone replacement therapy, cosmetic proceedures ( breast augmentation, liposuction, trachea shave, rhinoplasti ) and gender reassignment surgery for the trans patient. These out of pocket expenses are the reason a transgendered person faces costs anywhere from a few thousand dollars up into the area of tens of thousands dollars. Like so many in society these days you probably are thinking to yourself if not saying it, " They chose this lifestyle so it is their own fault." I sometimes wish it was that easy. For if it were so many of us might not have the problems we face each day.
